Bass Poison Ivy (Bass Fuzz)

£259.00

SKU: FGP-LR-BPI Categories: ,

The “Bass Poison Ivy” pedal is based on the sort of preamp you would find on a bass amplifier. The pedal buffers and splits the incoming signal, one half is distorted by the amount set by the ‘Fuzz’ control which is then shaped by the ‘Attack’ control. ‘Attack’ is the mix between the fuzz and a further treble boosted fuzz. The two signal paths meet again at the ‘Blend’ control allowing the original signal to be mixed with the distorted version. Finally the overall level of the combined signals can be arrived at using the ‘Volume’ control. This pedal has plenty in the tank and can give the bass guitar some subtle fuzz tones but still give you a nasty growl when you need it.

The blue halo light ring installed diffuses the light when playing live, avoiding being blinded by the standard LEDs just as you are about to go into that all important solo thus giving a larger area to see where the pedal is located easily on the pedal board on darkened stages. The addition of the aluminium foot topper gives you more real estate for contact when switching the pedal on and off during quick changes when playing live.

All Flattley “Platinum Range” pedals are hand processed in our Flattley paint shop. The bare aluminium enclosure is abraded prior to painting with the etch primer. The etch primer acts as a anti corrosive layer and allows the primer to bond to the enclosure ensuring a tough resilient paint finish.

Multiple coats of base coat primer are applied which are then lightly abraded to remove any blemishes or paint speckles prior to the application of the base colour. We apply several coats of base colour until an even coverage occurs and the base colour develops rich smooth depth. Metallic holographic chrome flake is then applied using a clear inter coat which adds that all important Flattley sparkle.

The pedal enclosure is now ready to be hydro dipped in its Flattley graphics. This is the process whereby the graphics are applied using water activated film, the residual PVA film is then washed off and the enclosure is then allowed to dry naturally.

Once dried the lacquer process begins. Each “Flattley Platinum” pedal has a minimum of three coats of lacquer which are all wet sanded between coats. Once the lacquer has hardened, it is then hand polished using three different grades of polishing compounds and it then has a final polish to achieve a high gloss finish using a wool finishing pad. This process gives the smooth deep lustre finish that is inherent in all Flattley Guitar and Bass effects pedals.

This pedal was featured in 2018’s Bass Magazine and this is what they said:

Meanwhile, the Poison Ivy fuzz pedal offers fuzz tones from the subtle to the extreme, and everything in between. How you wish to drench your tone with fuzz is determined by the Blend control, and the fuzz tone itself is impressive, whether you play with a pick, fingerstyle or slap. 8/10

What intially sold me on this peddle was the blend control. We all know about bass distortions sucking away the bottom end, well not on this peddle.
Unfortunately the demo above does not do this pedal any favours, it’s far more versatile. Whilst capable of nasty death metal/industrial distortions, I’ve used it a couple of ways: as an almost synth like effect; and to add some dirt on top to fill the sound during guitar breaks.
So, Pro’s include the above, plus it looks particularly awesome (I have the blue graphic).
Cons? The input/output are not labelled, which still confuses me even seven months later. There is not cradle for the battery, so it rattles around inside.
Conclusion: well I love it. It’s versatile, sounds great and looks great, and Paul and the gang are awesome people to deal with.

Hi Simon, thanks for the kind words and feedback. Glad you use it for what its made for and we’re currently looking at small identifying plaques to label the In/Out sockets so when they are made I will send you some. Best regards Team Flattley

  2. Matt ‘Donk’ Clark

I’ll start by saying I am not really a fuzz user but having played through this pedal it really has got me thinking about using fuzz a lot more. The actual ‘fuzz’ tone is one of the best I’ve used. The build quality on these pedals is phenomenal, I would be willing to bet you would be hard pressed to find a pedal of this quality on the mass produced market. The art work and finish is flawless. The controls on the Ivy are super simple to use and be able to dial in the tone your looking for is a breeze.

I love the input/output/power being on the top panel! I wish every pedal manufacturer did this!! It make’s wiring a pedal board so much easier and neater.

Stunning pedals, can’t wait to try more.

  3. Kevin Hide

Excellent fuzz pedal for bass. Classic Germanium design, adjusted by the Attack knob, with a crucial wet/dry blend. LOTS of tone packed into these, with anything from very warm, woolly, vintage sound to a harsher, hifi, more gated fuzz. Works well with active and passive basses (have a play, it’s very responsive to what goes in) and stacks really well with other drive pedals; I use them to tame the high end in the more extreme settings and give the clean tone allowed through with the blend a grindy edge. Fan of Muse? You’ll like what this can do.

I’m a gear head and have owned countless fuzz pedals and this is up there with the best of them. Better still, you’re supporting a small Uk builder!

I commissioned a custom Poison Ivy with a gorgeous oil slick metallic finish, very high quality feel and looks fantastic on my otherwise very black/grey board.

  4. Mark Fontanarosa

I agree with all the other comments above, it’s’ a fuzz pedal that can go from subtle to full blown fuzz and retain its character. The blend knob is a blessing and makes a big difference in dialing your tone. Can’t wait for more bass pedals from Paul and the gang. Thanks
